Waking Dreams of China Town, Somewhere Around Here

Curated by Camila Salcedo and Katie Belcher for Eyelevel artist-run-centre

Waking Dreams of Chinatown, Somewhere Around Here is an artist-talk-walk-food-tour that took place on Saturday, August 26th, in the format of a lunch talk (12pm-3pm) and a dinner talk (4pm-7pm). The locations varied based on attendees’ restaurant, food establishment and/or dish suggestions. Each participant is a collaborator by having suggested a destination and a dish/ food item and attending. I compiled lunch and dinner tour itineraries based on registered-participants’ suggestions.

This talk had a capacity of about 12 people (6 people per tour) and took place in two iterations in order to accommodate everyone for transportation. All the locations for both tours were cumulatively mapped onto one tablecloth, creating a concentration of experience/information that elaborates an idea of Chinatown and its geography around Halifax.

The conversations were recorded and will be turned into podcast episodes to be released through the year.

About the series: Food For Thoughts (FFT) is Eyelevel’s discussion series which was started in the summer of 2016. Back for a second year, through this program Eyelevel is aiming to de-centre western notions of what an artist-talk looks and sounds like. As a gallery-less artist-run centre we prioritize programs that take the visual arts into the public sphere. Through off-site talks, potluck picnics, podcast episodes, a publication, and a picnic starter pack, FFT aims to prompt critical discussions surrounding art practices while sharing food.
