The women we want to be [cha]

2009

2 channel video installation
4:04 minutes, looped

My mother and I perform a series of simple actions that I associate with tradition, discipline, duty and deference. “Cha” is the only syllable spoken between my mother and I. Each of us pronounces the Chinese word “cha” in a different intonation, which alters the sound’s meaning.

The two images in the video still above are 2 individually projected channels of video. When installed, the image to the left (close-up profile portrait) is projected on a wall that is ideally positioned at approximately 10 feet in front of another wall on which the second channel (of my mother and I) is projected.
